Karen D. Jones is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at East Carolina University. She earned her Ph.D. in School Improvement and M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas State University. She obtained a B.S. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Jones was a public school teacher working with students with special education needs and English Language Learners. She worked as curriculum specialist and behavior coach as well as a district- and campus-level administrator. Dr. Jones was Austin Independent School District’s Assistant Principal of the Year in 2015. Her scholarship reflects her experiences as a practitioner working in schools serving students from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Jones is concerned with the implications of state and national policies on the work of educators and students, particularly when policy leads to educational inequities.
