East Carolina University’s College of Education is pleased to have had this opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations from around the state for their extensive contributions to the field of education. The Educators Hall of Fame was initiated in 1999 to permanently acknowledge education professionals and associations who have made distinguished contributions to the field of education through service and mission. Nominations were secured with a minimum $1000 gift to the College for the establishment of the Educators Hall of Fame Endowment Scholarship. Scholarships will be given to outstanding education majors. The awards ceremony is held each Fall.

The late Mrs. Debbie O’Neal attended Pennsylvania State University undergraduate and the University of Pennsylvania for her Masters Degree in Education and Linguistics. Debbie owned various businesses including Fired Works Café in Greenville and Pilots in Pink. She was an English Lecturer at ECU from 1993-1998 and again from 2004 until her passing in 2013. Mrs. O’Neal received the Carolina Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Service Award in 2010. She was inducted into the Chancellor’s Leadership Academy in 2008 and became an ECU Scholar in 2011.
Mrs. Osborne received her Bachelor of Science degree from East Carolina University in 1972. Mrs. Osborne retired this year after 29 years of teaching. She was a teaching assistant in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system and a third grade teacher in Wayne County Schools. During her years at Wells Elementary school in Wilson, Mrs. Osborne’s third grade class consistently made high marks on the EOG tests. Mrs. Osbourne frequently helped at-risk children and children whose first language was not English. She would arrive early to school so she could provide free tutoring services for her students prior to the start of classes. She has been a good mother and teacher for her own three children, who all graduated from East Carolina University’ and are doing well in the business world as well as the medical field.
